Alabama-
Alabama is a state in the southeastern United States, situated between Mississippi and Georgia. It covers an area of 135,767 km² (52,420 sq mi). The population of Alabama is approximately 4.9 million people as of 2019. The state capital and largest city is Montgomery, with Birmingham being the second-largest city known for its industrialization.
Alabama is located in the southeastern United States. It borders Tennessee to the north and Florida to the south. A small part of Alabama’s southwestern land reaches the Gulf of Mexico. The region became part of Britain in 1763 and then became part of the United States in 1783. Alabama officially joined the Union as the 22nd state on December 14, 1819.
Alaska
Alaska, the largest state in the United States, is located northwest of North America. It spans an impressive area of 1,723,337 km² (665,384 sq mi), making it the largest state in the country. The U.S. federal government takes care of approximately 65% of Alaska’s land, which includes 24 national parks, 16 wildlife refuges, and two national forests.
Alaska is located separate from the 48 contiguous U.S. states by Canada. The Bering Strait, a strait between the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, separates Asia (specifically the Chukchi Peninsula of Russia) from North America (specifically the Seward Peninsula of Alaska). Alaska shares borders with Canada to the east (specifically the Canadian provinces of Yukon Territory and British Columbia), and it also has a maritime border with Russia to the west. Arizona
Arizona is a state located in the southwestern parts of the United States. It shares a border with Mexico to the south. The state covers an area of 295,234 km² (113,990 sq mi), which is approximately 2.4 times smaller than Texas and slightly smaller than Italy (301,318 km²) or the Philippines (300,000 km²).
Arizona, known as the Grand Canyon State, shares borders with Utah, New Mexico, Sonora and Baja California (Mexico), California, and Nevada. Arkansas
Arkansas, known as the Natural State, is a landlocked state located in the South Central region of the United States. It shares borders with six other states: Missouri to the north, Louisiana to the south, Oklahoma to the west, and Texas to the southwest.
The state is also bordered by the Mississippi River, which divides it from Tennessee and Mississippi in the east. Covering an area of 137,730 km² (53,178 sq mi), Arkansas is slightly larger than half the size of the U.K.
California
California, the third largest state in the United States, is located on the western coast and is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. It shares borders with Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and Mexico. The United States acquired this area from Mexico in 1848, and it has maintained its current boundaries since then. California was not organized as a territory but was governed by a federal military authority until it became a state on September 9, 1850, as the 31st state to join the Union. California, the most populous state in the United States, covers an area of 423,970 km².
Colorado
Colorado is one of the 50 states in the United States. It covers an area of 269,837 km² (104,094 sq mi), which is about the same size as New Zealand (270,467 km²) or slightly larger than the United Kingdom (242,900 km²). This landlocked state, named after the Colorado River, is located in the central part of the United States. It is one of three states (along with Wyoming and Utah) with straight lines of latitude and longitude as their boundaries.
Colorado shares borders with Wyoming and Nebraska to the north, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma and New Mexico to the south, and Utah to the west. The United States acquired a portion of Colorado through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and the remaining area was ceded by Mexico in 1848. On August 1, 1876, Colorado became the 38th state to join the Union.
Connecticut
Connecticut, located in the northeastern corner of the United States, is one of the six New England states. With an area of 5,543 sq mi (14,356 km²) and a population of 3.56 million (est. 2019), it is the third smallest state in the U.S. It shares borders with Massachusetts to the north, Rhode Island to the east, and the State of New York to the west. To the south, Connecticut is bounded by the Long Island Sound, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean.
Delaware
Delaware, located in the Middle Atlantic region, is primarily on the northeastern Delmarva Peninsula. With an area of 6,446 km² (2,489 sq mi), it is the second smallest state in the United States, following Rhode Island. Measuring 154 km (95.5 mi) in length from north to south, it is only 14.5 km (9 mi) wide at its narrowest point. The state has three counties, New Castle, Kent, and Sussex, arranged north-to-south.
It shares borders with New Jersey to the east, separated by the Delaware River and Delaware Bay, as well as the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. In the south and west, it is bordered by Maryland along the Mason-Dixon line. Additionally, there is a short border with Pennsylvania in the north, formed by the Twelve-Mile Circle.
It is one of the original 13 colonies that played a significant role in breaking away from English rule and establishing the United States. It holds the distinction of being the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, earning it the title of the “First State.” The name Delaware pays homage to Lord De La Warr, an esteemed English politician who served as the inaugural governor of the Virginia Colony.
Florida
Florida is a well-known state in the southeastern part of the United States. It is often referred to as the Sunshine State. Located on a long, flat peninsula, Florida is covered by the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The arm spans an area of 170,304 km² (65,755 sq mi), with over one-fifth of the state being covered by water.
Florida boasts more than 12,000 km² (4,700 sq mi) of lakes, with 7,700 of them being more significant than 4 hectares. To the north, Florida shares borders with the U.S. states of Alabama and Georgia. The United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1819, when it was known as Florida Territory. It officially became the 27th state on March 3, 1845.
Georgia
Georgia is one of the 50 states in the southeastern part of the United States. It should not be confused with the country of Georgia in southwestern Asia, which used to be part of the Soviet empire; it’s known as the “Peach State” and is also referred to as the “Yankee-land of the South.” The state has an area of 153,909 km² (59,425 sq mi), making it about half the size of Italy. It connects the Atlantic Ocean in the southeast and shares state lines with Tennessee and North Carolina in the north. The Chattahoochee River forms part of its border with Alabama in the southwest and a small portion of its border with Florida. The Savannah River is a natural border with South Carolina in the east.
Hawaii
Hawaii, a state in the United States, is a group of islands in the central Pacific Ocean. It is situated southwest of the continental United States, about 4,400 km (2,800 mi) south of Alaska and 4,200 km (2,600 mi) north of Tahiti (French Polynesia). Known as the Aloha State, Hawaii consists of numerous islands spread over more than 2,400 km (1,500 mi). The total area of these islands is 28,313 km² (10,932 sq mi).
Idaho
Idaho is a mountainous state located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is landlocked and covers an area of 216,632 km² (83,570 sq mi). The state shares a 72 km (44.7 mi) boundary with the Canadian province of British Columbia at the 45th parallel north. The ridges of the Bitterroot Range define its border with Montana. Idaho also borders the U.S. states of Wyoming in the southeast, Nevada and Utah in the south, and Washington and Oregon in the west.
Illinois
Illinois is located in the eastern region of the United States, known as the Midwest. It has 149,998 km² (57,914 sq mi), making it the 25th largest state. Illinois shares borders with Wisconsin to the north, Michigan via Lake Michigan to the northeast, Indiana to the east, and Kentucky to the southeast. The Mississippi River is a natural border with Missouri and Iowa in the west. Illinois is commonly referred to as “The Prairie State.”
Indiana
Indiana, located in the Midwestern part of the United States, is commonly referred to as the ‘Crossroads of America.’ Despite its relatively small size (ranked 38th in the U.S.), it spans an area of 94,321 km² (36,418 sq mi). Indiana shares borders with Ohio to the east, Illinois to the west (with the Wabash River forming part of the southern border), Kentucky to the south (with the Ohio River serving as a natural boundary), and Michigan to the north. Additionally, Indiana has a short coastline along Lake Michigan in the northwest.
Iowa
Iowa is a state found in the Midwest region of the United States and covers an area of 145,746 km² (56,272.81 sq mi). It is surrounded by Minnesota to the north, Wisconsin to the northeast, Illinois to the east, Missouri to the south, Nebraska to the west, and South Dakota to the northwest.
One unique aspect of Iowa is that rivers entirely form its eastern and western borders. In the west, the Big Sioux River serves as most of the border with South Dakota, which joins the Missouri River to form the entire wall with Nebraska. On the eastern side, Iowa’s borders are defined by the Mississippi River, separating it from Wisconsin and Illinois.
Kansas
Kansas is a state located in the Midwest of the United States. It is situated on the eastern edge of the Great Plains and is approximately in the nation’s center. The state covers an area of 213,099 km², which is roughly equivalent to the size of Great Britain (the island) but in a nearly rectangular shape.
Kansas is enclosed by Nebraska to the north, Oklahoma to the south, Missouri to the east, and Colorado to the west. Before European colonization, the Great Plains were home to various Native American nomadic tribes who spoke Siouan languages, such as the Kaws, Quapaws, Omahas, Osages, and Poncas. The United States obtained the territory of present-day Kansas from France in 1803 through the Louisiana Purchase. On January 29, 1861, Kansas became the 34th state to join the Union.
Kentucky
Kentucky, also known as the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is one of the 50 states in the United States. It is located in the east-south-central region, specifically along the western side of the Appalachian Mountains. Kentucky covers an area of 104,659 km² (40,409 sq mi), referred to as the Upland South.
The state shares borders with Virginia to the southeast and Tennessee to the south. The Ohio River conforms as a natural boundary with Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. In the eastern part of Kentucky, the Big Sandy and Tug Fork Rivers mark the state line with West Virginia. Lastly, in the southwest, the Mississippi River forms the border with Missouri.
Louisiana
Louisiana is one of the 50 states in the United States. It is located in the West South Central region, between Texas and Mississippi, and south of Arkansas. The state has approximately 4,800 km (3,000 mi) of curving shorelines along the Gulf of Mexico in the south. The Sabine River forms the border with Texas, while the Mississippi and Pearl Rivers define sections of the border with Mississippi. Initially, Louisiana referred to a large area in the Mississippi basin claimed by French explorer La Salle for France in 1682. This land was later sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Louisiana became the 18th state of the United States in 1812.
Maine
Maine, the easternmost state in the U.S., is located in the northeastern region of the country. It covers an area of 91,646 km² (35,385 sq mi) and is the northernmost of the six New England states. Maine shares borders with the Canadian provinces of Québec to the northwest and New Brunswick to the north and northeast. To the southeast, it is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (Gulf of Maine), and to the southwest, it shares a border with the U.S. state of New Hampshire. Maine is known as “The Pine Tree State,” it is promoted as “Vacationland” by the United States’ destination-marketing organization.
Maryland
Maryland, with an area of 32,131 km² (12,406 sq mi), is ranked 42nd among the 50 U.S. states. It is found in the Mid-Atlantic region of the northeastern United States. To the north, it shares a border with Pennsylvania, separated by the Mason-Dixon line. The western boundary is defined by the Potomac River, which connects with West Virginia and Virginia.
On the eastern side, Maryland shares borders with Delaware and includes a significant portion of Washington, D.C., to the west. The Chesapeake Bay, a large body of water extending inland from the Atlantic Ocean, plays a central role in Maryland’s geography. The area that is now Maryland was originally part of the United States territory and was granted a charter as a colony in 1632. On April 28, 1788, Maryland became the seventh state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and join the Union.
Massachusetts
Massachusetts, known as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is a state located in the northeastern part of the United States. It covers an area of 27,336 km² (10,555 sq mi) and is one of the six New England states. Massachusetts shares borders with Vermont and New Hampshire to the north, Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south, and New York to the west. The Atlantic Ocean also borders the state to the east.
Massachusetts is often called “The Bay State” and “The Spirit of America,” which can be seen on its license plates. The name Massachusetts originates from the Massachusetts language, an Algonquian language, meaning “at the big hill” or “at the small, big hill.”
Michigan
Michigan is one of the states in the East North Central region of the United States. It has a total area of 250,485 km² (96,713 sq mi), slightly larger than the United Kingdom. The state’s name comes from the Ojibwa word mishigamaa (ᒥᓯᑲᒥ), meaning “large water” or “large lake.”
Michigan comprises two peninsulas with coastlines along four Great Lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie. The Great Lakes are a group of five large lakes that are interconnected and located in the east-central part of North America. They are the largest freshwater area in the world. Michigan shares borders with the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. states of Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin. It also has a water boundary with Illinois and Minnesota.
Minnesota
Minnesota is a state in the United States, occupying an area of 225,181 km² (86,939 sq mi). It is located in the western part of the Great Lakes Region and is known as the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’. Minnesota shares borders with the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba to the north, Dakota to the west, Iowa to the south, and Wisconsin to the southeast. It also has a water border with Michigan in Lake Superior. The state is divided into 87 counties.
Mississippi
Mississippi, one of the 50 states in the United States, is located in the Southern region known as the ‘Dixie.’ It is named after the Mississippi River, which runs along its western boundary. The state’s name originates from the Ojibwe word “misi-ziibi,” meaning “great river” or “gathering of waters.” Mississippi is officially referred to as the Magnolia State. It is part of the Bible Belt, a region in the southern and Midwestern U.S. where Protestant fundamentalism is widely practiced.
Mississippi shares its northern border with Tennessee. The Tennessee River defines a small portion of the Mississippi/Alabama border in the northeastern corner, while the rest of the state border follows a straight line. This line divides what used to be the entire Mississippi Territory. The lower Mississippi River forms the state’s border with the Arkansas section and part of the Louisiana border in the west. In contrast, the Pearl River includes the southern portion of the Mississippi/Louisiana border.
Missouri
Missouri is a state located in the Midwestern United States. It is surrounded by eight neighboring states: Iowa to the north, Illinois to the east (across the Mississippi River), Kentucky to the southeast, Tennessee and Arkansas to the south, Oklahoma and Kansas to the west, and Nebraska to the northwest (across the Missouri River). The state gets its name from the Missouri River, named after the Missouri Native American tribe. Missouri is often referred to as “The Show Me State.”
Montana
Montana is a U.S. state located in the northwestern region of the country. It is known for its mountainous terrain and is enclosed by the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan to the north. To the east, it shares borders with the U.S. states of North Dakota and South Dakota, while Wyoming lies to the south and Idaho to the west and southwest.
Montana gained its nickname “The Treasure State” and is often called “Big Sky Country.” It became a part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and was examined by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805-06. Montana officially joined the Union as the 41st state on November 8, 1889.
Nebraska
Nebraska is located in the central United States, west of the Mississippi River. It is in the Great Plains region, known for its primarily flat land stretching from north to south. Nebraska shares borders with South Dakota to the north, Kansas to the south, Colorado to the southwest, and Wyoming to the west.
Nevada
Nevada is a state located in the western part of the United States. It spans an area of 286,380 km², slightly larger than the United Kingdom. Nevada shares borders with Oregon and Idaho to the north, Utah to the east, Arizona to the southeast, and California to the west and southwest. The United States acquired Nevada from Mexico in 1848. On March 2, 1861, Nevada Territory was established from the western portion of Utah Territory. In 1862, the territory expanded its boundaries along the eastern edge of Utah Territory. Finally, Nevada became the 36th state recognized in the Union on October 31, 1864.
New Hampshire
New Hampshire, a state in the northeastern region of New England, covers an area of 24,214 km². It bordered the Canadian province of Québec to the north and northwest and with the U.S. states of Maine to the east and Massachusetts to the south. To the west, its border with Vermont is formed by the Connecticut River. The British Empire developed in the early 17th century through English settlement in North America.
New Jersey
New Jersey is one of the 50 states in the United States of America, located in the northeastern part of the country. It shares borders with New York to the north and northeast, Delaware to the south and southwest across Delaware Bay, and Pennsylvania to the west across the Delaware River. It became one of the original thirteen states and was admitted to the Union on December 18, 1787, as the third state.
New Mexico
New Mexico, located in the Mountain Division of the southwestern United States, is a landlocked state. It spans an area of 314,917 km² (121,590 sq mi), making it the fifth largest state in the U.S. It shares borders with Colorado to the north, Oklahoma and Texas to the east, Chihuahua and Sonora (Mexican states) to the south, and Arizona to the west.
New York (state)
The State of New York is located in the northeastern United States. The Canadian provinces of Québec and Ontario, Lake Ontario in the northwest, and the Atlantic coastline in the southeast border it. Known as “The Empire State,” it covers an area of 141,299 km² (54,556 sq mi).
New York shares borders with Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The St Lawrence River forms part of its border with Canada. Initially settled by the Dutch, the land was surrendered to the British in 1664. New York was part of the original territory of the United States and became a state on July 26, 1788.
North Carolina
North Carolina, a state in the eastern United States, is centrally located with a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It shares borders with Virginia to the north, South Carolina to the south, Georgia to the southwest, and Tennessee to the west. The state is commonly referred to as the “Tar Heel State.”
North Dakota
North Dakota is a state located in the north-central United States, covering 183,107 km² (70,698 sq mi). The state shares boundaries with the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the north, South Dakota to the south, and Montana to the west. Its eastern border is defined by the winding Red River of the North, which separates it from Minnesota. The territory that comprises present-day North Dakota was contracted through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and a treaty with Great Britain in 1818. On November 2, 1889, North Dakota became the 39th (or 40th) state to join the United States alongside South Dakota.
Ohio
Ohio, located in the northeastern United States, covers an area of 116,096 km² and has a shoreline along Lake Erie. It shares borders with Ontario, Canada to the north, Michigan to the northwest, Pennsylvania to the east, and Indiana to the west. The Ohio River serves as its southeastern border with West Virginia and Kentucky. Initially acquired by Britain from France in 1763 and later by the U.S. in 1783 after the American Revolution, Ohio became the 17th state upon its admission to the Union on March 1, 1803.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma, a federal state of the United States, spans 181,195 km² (69,898 sq mi). Located between the Ozark Mountains Great and the Plains, it is positioned near the geographic center of the contiguous 48 states. Oklahoma shares borders with Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, and New Mexico.
Oregon
Oregon, one of the 50 states in the U.S., is located in the northwestern region of the country. It is among the three states in the contiguous U.S. with a coastline along the Pacific Ocean. The borders of Oregon are defined by the Colombia River in the north, the Snake River in the east, and the 42nd parallel north in the south, which separates it from Washington, Idaho, California, and Nevada. The British claims to the territory were officially transferred to the U.S. in 1846, and it became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859.
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania, known as the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the northeastern United States. It has a land area of 119,279 km² (46,054 sq mi) and a short shoreline of 70 km (43 mi) along Lake Erie. Pennsylvania is ranked as the 33rd largest state in the U.S. It shares borders with New York to the north and northeast, while the Delaware River forms parts of its eastern border with New York and New Jersey. To the south, it is bordered by West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware, and to the west by Ohio.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States, known as the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It is located on the East Coast in the New England Region and has a total area of 3,999 km² (1,544 sq mi), with a significant portion being water. Rhode Island shares borders with Massachusetts and Connecticut and is surrounded by Block Island Sound and Rhode Island Sound. It also has a maritime border with New York State. Narragansett Bay extends into the southeastern part of Rhode Island.
South Carolina
South Carolina, located in the southeastern United States, spans an area of 82,931 km² (32,020 sq mi). The Atlantic Ocean bounds it to the southeast and by North Carolina to the north and northeast. The western border is formed by the Savannah River, which serves as a natural boundary with Georgia. South Carolina is referred to as “The Palmetto State.”
South Dakota
South Dakota, a landlocked state in the Great Plains region of the U.S. mainland, shares borders with North Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Wyoming, and Montana. It is comprised of 66 counties. The majority of South Dakota was acquired by the United States from France in 1803 through the Louisiana Purchase. In 1889, the Dakota Territory was divided into North and South, and on November 2 of that year, South Dakota, along with North Dakota, became a part of the Union.
Tennessee
Tennessee, a landlocked state in the central-southeastern United States, shares borders with eight other states. To the north are Kentucky and Virginia, while North Carolina lies to the east. In the south, Tennessee is bordered by Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Along the Mississippi River in the west, it shares borders with Arkansas and Missouri. Known as “The Volunteer State,” Tennessee was originally part of North Carolina until it was ceded to the United States in 1790.
Texas
Texas, located in the south-central part of the United States, is one of the 50 states. It has a 560 km (350 mi) long beachline on the Gulf of Mexico in the southeast and shares a 3,169 km (1,969 mi) long border with Mexico. The Rio Grande, Texas’ longest river, forms the border to several Mexican states in the southwest. Texas also borders New Mexico to the west and Oklahoma to the north. It has a short border with Arkansas in the east and is bounded by Louisiana to the east as well. Texas is known for its size, bluebonnets, Texas longhorns, cowboy mythology, tornadoes, its connection to the assassination of President Kennedy, and its association with space exploration through Houston.
Utah
Utah, a landlocked state in the western United States, shares borders with Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. It is comprised of 29 counties. Originally part of Mexico, Utah became a U.S. territory in 1848 and achieved statehood in 1896 as the 45th state.
Vermont
Vermont, located in the eastern U.S. mainland, is one of the six states in the New England region. It shares its borders with Canada (Québec province) to the north, New Hampshire to the east (defined by the Connecticut River), New York state to the northwest (separated by Lake Champlain), and Massachusetts to the south.
Originally part of the United States territory and situated in the Charter of New England, Vermont was later incorporated into grants that formed New York in 1664 and 1674. On January 18, 1777, Vermont declared itself an independent republic and became the first state in North America to abolish slavery. Finally, on February 18, 1791, Vermont joined the Union as its 14th state.
Virginia
Virginia, known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, is located in the eastern part of the United States. It shares borders with the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Kentucky to the southwest, West Virginia to the north and west, Maryland and the District of Columbia to the northeast, and North Carolina and Tennessee to the south. Virginia covers an area of 110,787 km² (42,775 sq mi), which is comparable in size to Bulgaria or Cuba. It is commonly referred to as The Old Dominion.
Washington
Washington, the northwesternmost state in the contiguous United States, shares borders with British Columbia, Idaho, and the Pacific Ocean. The Columbia River defines a significant portion of its southern border with Oregon.
